While there are over 600 Eucalyptus species and varieties, less than 12 are viable producers of essential oils, and Yesteryear Plantations specialises in producing the very best pure oils and oil-based products for you. Yesteryear Plantations Eucalyptus Oil (or Euco) is the essential oil distilled from "Radiata" and "Blue Mallee" variants.

The radiata variant grows at altitudes of over 200 metres and below 1200 metres, and between latitudes 33-38 degrees South. And the Tumut/Batlow region (where we are) is one of Australia's main growing areas for the production of high-quality Euco.

Frosts are common, and parts of the region get snowfalls in winter.

In the mid-1800s Baron Ferdinand von Mueller was so fascinated by the properties of Euco that he prompted a Victorian colleague (a pharmacist), Joseph Bosisto, to investigate commercial production of the essential oil.

An immediate hit, Euco quickly found a place in the medicinal, industrial and perfumery sectors.

The active therapeutic ingredient in Euco is cineole, which needs to be concentrated to a level of at least 70% to make the oil such a powerful healing agent.

Traditional methods of working natural stands of Eucalyptus trees have largely been replaced by the harvesting of "domesticated" plantation trees. This domestication has reduced the labour and handling costs involved in extracting the oil, without affecting the quality of the oil. Blue Mallee, in particular, has adapted well to this style of mechanised farming and harvesting.

Yesteryear Plantations Eucalyptus Oil was first produced on "Valley Views' (situated near Tumut and Batlow) in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in 1940.

The Sturgess family purchased "Valley Views" in 1951, and Eucalyptus oil has been a part of our lives ever since.

Methods of production and farming have been modified and improved over the years, but Yesteryear Plantations Eucalyptus Oil is as fragrant and pure as when it was first produced.

What is Tea Tree Oil?

Since the discovery, over fifty years ago, of its therapeutic properties, the essential oil steam-distilled from the foliage of the Tea Tree, Melaleuca alternifolia, has become commercially established on the world market.

Yesteryear Plantations Tea Tree Oil is a valuable germicide in a wide variety of septic conditions. It has the unique property of penetrating deeply into infected tissue and pus, mixing with it and causing the infected tissue to slough off, leaving a healthy surface, while at the same time showing a negligible toxicity to the host. Consequently, it is of special value in surgical and dental work and is most effective against boils, carbuncles and even intractable infections of staphylococcus.

Its usefulness extends to the treatment of skin, mouth, throat and vaginal infections. It is not only a germicide, but also a fungicide and can be used to treat such conditions as ringworm and tinea, and has been used successfully in the treatment of burns.

Today, Yesteryear Plantations Tea Tree Oil is used in the manufacture of health care and toiletry products. The oil's stability and spicy character are valued by the flavouring, perfumery and soap industries.

Tea Tree Oil is a powerful medicine which is relatively gentle to the skin. It penetrates to the site of infection and heals while being kind to healthy tissue. Studies have proven its value in treating:

  • sinusitis
  • sore throat
  • tinea
  • candida
  • burns
  • rashes
  • cuts
  • insect bites
  • abrasions
  • bee stings
  • impetigo
  • boils
  • pimples
  • acne
  • cold sores
  • foot odour
  • arthritis
  • muscular aches and pains
  • many other conditions
